The Politeknik Ilmu Pelayaran, based in the city of Balikpapan, was established on the recommendation of Kopertis XI for the Kalimantan Region No. 736/ K11.A/ KL/ 2011 dated 15 June 2011, concerning the opening of the Study Program and the Establishment of the Balikpapan Shipping Science Polytechnic. PIP Balikpapan was established on the basis of a very urgent need for skilled and professional personnel in the shipping sector. The shipping sector is one of the sectors that is very fast and supports the development of the city of Balikpapan, for this reason it is necessary to develop educational facilities and infrastructure to support human resources in this sector.

The Putra Mandiri Balikpapan Foundation is the foundation that oversees The Politeknik Ilmu Pelayaran. The Foundation, through a Coordination Meeting of the board of directors, agreed to establish the Politeknik Ilmu Pelayaran by opening three Study Programs/majors, namely:

  1. D-III Nautics
  2. D-III Engineering
  3. D-IV KPNK (Management of Commercial Shipping and Ports)

The Politeknik Ilmu Pelayaran began its academic activities based on an operational permit from the Director General of Higher Education through the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia No. 589/E/O/2014 dated 17 October 2014.
